“I have been a student of Brian Adams since 1964. After 7 years of consistent hard Training I earned a black belt From Brian In Kenpo Karate. I have been influenced by that training and my ongoing relationship with Brian ever since.

Brian’s instructionsʻ perspectives, and insights have infuenced me ever since i trained under him. This Is true even though I have lived and trained intermittantly with various martial arts in Hawai’i home since 1970. Training with Brian continues to be an essential foundation for my further evolution in The “arts” and in my professional life as an educator and School administrator. Many of The lessons learned from Brian have universal applications even outside the martial arts.

Under (now) Grandmaster Brian Adamʻs instruction and influence, unnecessary complexities in movement and approaches become simple, useable, and understandable. He sees and teaches “The essence”. His own continued lifelong learning, evolution and wisdom has resulted in a body of knowledge (Integrated Martial Arts) which continues to nurture his numerous past and current students.”

“It was in the summer of 1965 that I was pulled to walk in the front door of Brian Adams Kenpo Karate school. Watching Brian demonstrate some of his art was a jaw dropping moment for me. His skill inspired me to enroll in classes. Being motivated to start I committed myself to do what the teacher said. When it comes to Karate, he knew & I didn’t. I committed to show up consistently, follow his guidance and to stay with it no matter what.

The night of my black belt test Brian dropped an unexpected question on me in front of everybody, “What is black belt?” I was pleased with the answer that came to me, “It’s a beginning”. “Very well”, as he hands me my black belt.

Here it is today more than 50 years later. Each day when I wake up I’m still inspired to practice. It’s called “beginners mind”. Only now it’s yoga & meditation.”The heart know no boundary, consciousness is without limit. I consider it my rare and good fortune to have been a student of Brians. If you have the opportunity in this life to take in some of his teaching, do it! You'll be pleased that you did.”

“The beauty of IMA is in how it can easily be applied in real world situations.

One instance that comes to mind is I was with my family at the movie theater watching a kids film. All of the sudden a guy randomly stands up and starts throwing his popcorn at the crowd shouting obscenities. Other parents got scared and irritated real quick, the tension in the theater was building up. Confident in my training I decided to go behind the assailant’s back and applied a rear naked choke, submitting him, de-escalating the situation, escorted the subject out of the premises and restrained him until authorities came and arrested him.

Came back to my seat and a person sat next to me, it was the theater’s manager. He told me they saw how I managed the situation and in gratitude they gave me and my family complimentary movie passes.

IMA not only gave me the knowledge and training to handle a tough situation, it also gave me free movie tickets.”
